Key Definitions

Foot or Bit is the tab at the end of the key.
Head is the handle portion of the key.
Shaft is the portion of the key that can be inserted into the lock mechanism.
Throw is the distance from center of shaft to end of foot.
Ward is the notch or slot in the foot of a key.

Lock Definitions

Full Mortise locks fit into a pocket with only the face of the lock being visible.
Half Mortise locks fit in a notch with the back and face of the lock visible.
Flush Mount locks mount flat onto the surface.
Face the tongue side of the lock.
Tongue the tab that extends to perform the locking action between two surfaces.

Brass darkening solution is fast acting and can be used to achieve an antiqued appearance on brass, copper, or bronze. Immerse the brass item in the solution, let is set until desired color is attained, then rinse with water and wipe dry. It casuses no dimensional change.
