Question 2 Answer - Our Opinion

A buffet and sideboard are often used interchangeably--maybe just to add to our confusion. The dictionary doesn't provide much insight; it defines a sideboard as a piece of dining room furniture and a buffet as a sideboard. Wow, no wonder we're confused.

A buffet is used by the French to describe a small sideboard.

The top is used for serving food "buffet" style with storage beneath for silverware, dishes, and table linens. Some sideboards and buffets have fun features like doors that pop open when a button is depressed or a handle is pulled to reveal a "secret" storage area. Some have lift tops which reveal silverware storage.

The piece pictured above is less than 4 feet wide; which is the rule of thumb we use as the breakpoint. We consider this piece a buffet.
